The First Trimester has, luckily, come and gone! For me it was filled with fear, nausea and vomiting, happiness, exhaustion, bloating, and fast growth. With this being our fifth(!) pregnancy, my body just seemed to go into pregnancy mode very quickly.
Everyone’s First Trimester must haves are different, just as no 2 pregnancies are exactly the same. With that being said, hopefully something from this list might help somebody or spark an idea that works for them!
Starting from the day we found out I was pregnant, I went back on the Heparin regimen which caused a LOT of bloating and pain in my lower stomach area. To help combat these side effects, I opted to live in high-rise leggings and (for a bit got away with) looping a hair tie through the button area to extend my jeans. Once those two tricks got uncomfortable (just before 6 weeks), I bought side panel jeans from Target and maternity leggings from Macy’s.
Also, from the day I found out that we were pregnant, I was put on modified bed rest. Keeping myself entertained when I was awake was crucial. I rotated between TV shows (Rizzoli and Isles, Netflix documentaries, and HGTV reruns on Hulu), coloring, and sitting outside. The TV shows and sitting outside worked because I didn’t have to keep my eyes open. The coloring (more accurately scribbling) was something that I could when the nausea was at bay.
In addition to the activities, having a good pillow and blanket were crucial. I started with a bunch of standard size pillows piled around me and then transitioned to my older, trusty body pillow. It helped (and continues to help) me sleep and maintain a comfortable position.
Then there was food. For me, most things sounded horrible. When I felt fine enough to eat, very few things sounded appetizing. Ginger cookies, lemon-lime seltzer, and ice water were delicious!
The ginger cookies have always helped to settle my stomach, whether it was from my IBS or pregnancy. I alternated between the soft cookies and the thin crunchy ones.
I love water; it’s my drink of choice. Sometimes, though, I needed the bubbles and to taste a light flavor. The lemon-lime seltzer was another way to have water. It was at this point that I started to regularly drink a gallon of water each day.
Drinking this much water, insured that I was as hydrated as I could possibly be. I really think this helped me to avoid going into the hospital.
Lastly, and completely unrelated to the above, I used lotion religiously during the first trimester. It was usually unscented or very lightly scented. The Vaseline brand has been my go to for years and this didn’t change. Twice a day, when I felt up to it, I’d apply it from neck to toe. It made me feel refreshed and allowed me to hydrate my skin/body from the outside in.
