One Month Challenge | Curly Hair

curly hair

Happy May! It’s challenge month; hello curly hair! This month I am focusing on hair health! This means embracing my curly hair. No crazy shampoos, no traditional towels, and no heat styling. Yes, I am nervous. No I’m not ready, but there is no time better time than today!

I technically started yesterday (April 30, 2019), so that my hair was starting out natural today…

Curly Hair Products

I did a bunch of research and talked to quite a few curly haired ladies before buy all the products that I’ll be showing today. Everyone I talked to, and the websites I visited, all mentioned or specifically recommended investing in DevaCurl products, a microfiber towel, a shower cap, sleep scarf, and hair scrunchies. Ulta was my one stop shop!

In addition to the box of Wavy products from DevaCurl, I received a free cream from them to help define my curls.

I chose the Wavy products after taking the DevaCurl Quiz. This quiz shows you pictures of hair types, asks about the health of your hair, the density, and what you want for your hair. I figured that even if my hair needs a different curly product collection, starting out with the Wavy collection wouldn’t hurt my hair.

Aside from the DevaCurl products, everything I purchased was $12 or less! From what I can tell, if properly cared for, these products will last me a while.

Curly Hair Plan

Hair type: fine, oily scalp, wavy with some curlier areas

Prior to starting this curly process I was able to go about 2 days without washing my hair, depending on my level of activity. With that being said, I didn’t think or care about my hair getting wet. I am hoping that with these products I can stick to washing my hair every 2 days…and maybe even stretch it an extra day or two.

For my hair type, it is suggested that I wash my hair with the cleanser once a week and condition in between then. I can also spritz my hair with water or a water + conditioner mix on my in between days to liven up my hair, too.

Shower

When using the DevaCurl products, it’s easiest to apply the products in the shower, while your hair is soaking wet. You’ll apply whatever cleanser, conditioner and styling products to your hair before using a microfiber towel to remove excess water. Since I’m planning on sticking to the same hair washing schedule as before, I need to make sure that my hair has enough moisture in it.

Once a month I am planning on doing a deep condition to really jump start the hydration process.

Schedule

Day 1: Wash with cleanser and condition
While the conditioner is still in your hair, use a wide tooth comb or your fingers to gently detangle. After the shower, but before drying the hair apply the curl defining products. Wrap hair in the microfiber towel. When the hair is totally dry you can shake your roots to create volume. Style.

Day 2: If needed, spritz hair with water or water + conditioner mixture until your hair is saturated
Reapply curl defining products to your hair. Wrap hair in the microfiber towel. When the hair is totally dry you can shake your roots to create volume. Style.

Day 3: Wash with conditioner only (co-wash)
While the conditioner is still in your hair, use a wide tooth comb or your fingers to gently detangle. After the shower, but before drying the hair apply the curl defining products. Wrap hair in the microfiber towel. When the hair is totally dry you can shake your roots to create volume. Style.

Day 4: Follow Day 2

Day 5: Wash with conditioner only (co-wash)
Follow Day 3

Day 6: Follow Day 2

Day 7: Wash with cleanser and condition
While the conditioner is still in your hair, use a wide tooth comb or your fingers to gently detangle. After the shower, but before drying the hair apply the curl defining products. Wrap hair in the microfiber towel. When the hair is totally dry you can shake your roots to create volume. Style.

Sleep

This is hands down my biggest worry. For as long as I can remember, I slept with my hair in a tight braid, messy (but tight) bun, or a high and tight ponytail.

In order to keep as much of the curl as possible, “pineapple” the hair. Sleeping on a silk/satin pillow case will lessen thew friction and frizz! Instead of buying an expensive pillow case, I purchased the hair scarf. These two things are going to help maintain the curl and volume while you sleep without causing frizz to occur.

I’m still quite skeptical, but I’ll let you know how everything goes at the end of the month!

Help!

I need some recommendations and tips.

How do you style your hair without heat–day-to-day, date nights, girls night out, etc.?

What is your favorite silicone, paraben, and sulfate free deep conditioner?

I’d love some general tips and tricks that I’m sure I don’t even know about!

While I will have a written recap at the end of the month, you can follow the day to day of my hair journey over on Instagram. I’ll be posting and saving the stories related to hair under my “Hair Journey” Highlights.
